As much as I LOVE this sculpture/monument and agree wholeheartedly with the ideas behind it, I can’t say I agree with calling it the “African Holocaust.” By definition a holocaust is the result of the destruction or mass slaughter of a specific people especially through fire. So, by that definition, the African slave trade cannot be classified as a “holocaust.” Of course, the slave trade was an awful part of history and I feel deeply for those who were both directly and indirectly affected by it but by calling it a holocaust, one is rewriting history, therefore lessening the impact of the actual events of both the Jewish Holocaust and the African slave trade. The word SLAVE is already jarring. Be proud of your history even if it wasn’t pleasant.
I don’t know what this is about—-BUT THE SCULPTURE IS AWESOME.
